French Charcuterie & Cheese Guide

A charcuterie and cheese platter is central to French entertaining. This guide covers essential components, assembly, beverage pairings, presentation, and where to order authentic platters in Falls Church, VA to help you curate a balanced, crowd-pleasing spread.

What Are the Essential Components of a French Charcuterie & Cheese Platter?

A French platter combines cured meats, a selection of cheeses, and accompaniments to balance flavor and texture. Pick contrasting textures and complementary condiments so the board is attractive and easy to navigate.

Which French Cheeses Are Best for a Charcuterie Board?

Choose cheeses that contrast in texture and flavor: soft, semi‑firm, blue, and fresh types. Classic French options include:

  1. Brie: A soft, creamy cheese ideal for spreading.
  2. Comté: A firm, nutty cheese that pairs with fruits and nuts.
  3. Roquefort: A pungent blue that adds depth.
  4. Chèvre: A tangy goat cheese for a fresh contrast.

Together these choices provide variety in taste, texture, and appearance to invite tasting.

What Types of French Cured Meats and Accompaniments Should You Include?

Cured meats bring savory richness. Include a range of textures—from paper‑thin ham to dense dry sausage—to complement cheeses. Typical options include:

  1. Jambon de Bayonne or Prosciutto: Thinly sliced and delicate.
  2. Saucisson sec: A robust, dry cured sausage.
  3. Pâté: A spreadable meat paste for richness.

Finish the board with sharp accompaniments—cornichons, olives, nuts—and a few sweet elements like figs or jam to refresh the palate.

How to Assemble and Present a French Charcuterie Board for Entertaining

Step-by-step assembly of a French charcuterie board with cheeses and meats

Good presentation guides guests and encourages tasting. Keep the board approachable and organized so guests can combine items with ease.

What Are the Step-by-Step Tips for Arranging a French Cheese and Charcuterie Platter?

  1. Choose a Base: Use a large wooden board or slate.
  2. Arrange the Cheeses: Place and space cheeses first to create visual interest.
  3. Add the Meats: Fold or roll cured meats and position them near cheeses.
  4. Incorporate Accompaniments: Fill gaps with small bowls of olives, nuts, and cornichons.
  5. Garnish: Add fresh herbs or edible flowers for color.

This layout keeps items accessible and encourages pairing between cheeses, meats, and accompaniments.

How to Pair Baguette and Cornichons with Your Platter for Authentic Flavor

Baguette slices and cornichons are classic partners: bread supports spreads and adds texture; cornichons add a sharp, acidic counterpoint to fatty meats. Serve bread in a basket and cornichons in a small bowl for easy self-service.

Such a delicious experience at De Ma Vie in Tysons! We visited yesterday and absolutely loved it! Everything was delicious, especially the chicken soup — it was amazing! They also have a wonderful selection of bakery items, perfect to enjoy with a good coffee. And the service was incredible — everyone was so kind, welcoming, and attentive. Definitely a place to come back to! Highly recommended!

I have driven by De Ma Vie countless times since the sign first went up, and ever since they opened, I’ve been meaning to stop in. Today, I somehow found myself with a few extra minutes AND wasn’t running late to anything, so clearly, it was finally time. I stopped in just to see what kinds of pastries and baked goods they had and ended up having such a lovely and unexpected experience. I was helped by the father of the woman who runs the bakery (at least I believe that’s the family connection!). He patiently told me about the different pastries and treats, and as we talked, I learned that he was simply there helping out. Oh, and he also happens to be a trained orthopedic surgeon and researcher. Because apparently that’s who you casually meet while deciding which pastry you need. He was warm, kind, and interesting, and the whole interaction just felt authentic. Those kinds of experiences seem increasingly rare, and I really appreciated it. I’ve already enjoyed the rice pudding, which he topped with honey and pistachios because, as he explained, his daughter says you should always have it that way. His daughter is correct. It was great. I came home with several other things to try, all of which look fantastic. The pumpkin cheesecake is currently staring me down and will probably not survive the evening. I’ll definitely be back soon. I still need to try the soups he told me about, and hopefully next time I’ll get to meet his daughter too. Such a warm, charming first visit. I’m very glad I finally stopped in.

The croissant was SO good! Extremely flaky, fresh and difficult to not eat super fast. The soup was very good and I highly recommend it. Obviously not canned and the chicken was very good in it. It was a good portion and filling. The furniture and decor is not fancy, but I’m sure it will come along in time. Also it’s very clean. It’s right across the street from the Westin so there’s no excuse to not have a great breakfast here. Plenty of parking too.
