Frequently Asked Questions

What are some popular French pastries to serve at New Year's parties?

Beyond the Galette des Rois and Bûche de Noël, consider Tarte Tatin—a caramelised upside‑down apple tart—and profiteroles, cream‑filled choux often drizzled with chocolate. These desserts add variety and a touch of French elegance to your table, ideal for impressing guests.

How can I learn to make French pastries at home?

Take baking classes at local bakeries like De Ma Vie or use online courses. Cookbooks and video tutorials provide step‑by‑step instructions for classic recipes. Start with simpler pastries such as macarons or éclairs, then progress to more complex creations. Practice patiently and experiment with techniques and flavours.

What are the best ways to present French pastries at a gathering?

Presentation matters: use elegant platters or tiered stands to display pastries, arranging them by colour and size for visual impact. Garnish with fresh fruit, edible flowers or chocolate shavings, and label each pastry to inform guests about flavours—this adds a personal touch.

Are there any traditional French customs associated with New Year's pastries?

Traditional customs include sharing the Galette des Rois on Epiphany, where a hidden figurine crowns the finder king or queen, fostering community and celebration. Families also serve the Bûche de Noël as a holiday centrepiece, symbolising warmth and togetherness.

What dietary considerations should I keep in mind when ordering pastries?

Consider dietary restrictions such as gluten intolerance, nut allergies or vegan preferences. De Ma Vie Bakery offers gluten‑free options and can accommodate specific requests—always inform the bakery of allergies or dietary needs and ask about ingredients when placing your order.

How can I incorporate French pastries into a themed New Year's party?

Such a delicious experience at De Ma Vie in Tysons! We visited yesterday and absolutely loved it! Everything was delicious, especially the chicken soup — it was amazing! They also have a wonderful selection of bakery items, perfect to enjoy with a good coffee. And the service was incredible — everyone was so kind, welcoming, and attentive. Definitely a place to come back to! Highly recommended!

I have driven by De Ma Vie countless times since the sign first went up, and ever since they opened, I’ve been meaning to stop in. Today, I somehow found myself with a few extra minutes AND wasn’t running late to anything, so clearly, it was finally time. I stopped in just to see what kinds of pastries and baked goods they had and ended up having such a lovely and unexpected experience. I was helped by the father of the woman who runs the bakery (at least I believe that’s the family connection!). He patiently told me about the different pastries and treats, and as we talked, I learned that he was simply there helping out. Oh, and he also happens to be a trained orthopedic surgeon and researcher. Because apparently that’s who you casually meet while deciding which pastry you need. He was warm, kind, and interesting, and the whole interaction just felt authentic. Those kinds of experiences seem increasingly rare, and I really appreciated it. I’ve already enjoyed the rice pudding, which he topped with honey and pistachios because, as he explained, his daughter says you should always have it that way. His daughter is correct. It was great. I came home with several other things to try, all of which look fantastic. The pumpkin cheesecake is currently staring me down and will probably not survive the evening. I’ll definitely be back soon. I still need to try the soups he told me about, and hopefully next time I’ll get to meet his daughter too. Such a warm, charming first visit. I’m very glad I finally stopped in.

The croissant was SO good! Extremely flaky, fresh and difficult to not eat super fast. The soup was very good and I highly recommend it. Obviously not canned and the chicken was very good in it. It was a good portion and filling. The furniture and decor is not fancy, but I’m sure it will come along in time. Also it’s very clean. It’s right across the street from the Westin so there’s no excuse to not have a great breakfast here. Plenty of parking too.
