Croissant Authenticity: Tracing the Roots of a Traditional French Pastry

This investigation draws on concepts that have shaped the discipline of folklore since its inception to exact a fresh encounter with a transnationally popular item of Viennoiserie: the crescent-shaped pastry known as the croissant. Their application to this ephemeral foodways item sheds light on the croissant’s roots, dissemination, and distinct permutations. I discuss the origins of the pastry in the light of historic-geographic methodologies; its diffusion and evolution with reference to scholarship on tradition bearers, oikotypification, intertextuality and the role of the individual in perpetuating a tradition; and matters of its commodification and authenticity through consideration of how tradition functions in the modern age.

The Enduring Legacy of Artisanal French Bread

What the Anglo-Saxons call ‘French bread’ is found, in fact, all over Latin Europe; it is the ancestral form of bread, compared to the industrial food wrapped in a shroud of cellophane which is sold in the supermarkets of the Western world under the somewhat euphemistic label of ‘bread’.

Such a delicious experience at De Ma Vie in Tysons! We visited yesterday and absolutely loved it! Everything was delicious, especially the chicken soup — it was amazing! They also have a wonderful selection of bakery items, perfect to enjoy with a good coffee. And the service was incredible — everyone was so kind, welcoming, and attentive. Definitely a place to come back to! Highly recommended!

I have driven by De Ma Vie countless times since the sign first went up, and ever since they opened, I’ve been meaning to stop in. Today, I somehow found myself with a few extra minutes AND wasn’t running late to anything, so clearly, it was finally time. I stopped in just to see what kinds of pastries and baked goods they had and ended up having such a lovely and unexpected experience. I was helped by the father of the woman who runs the bakery (at least I believe that’s the family connection!). He patiently told me about the different pastries and treats, and as we talked, I learned that he was simply there helping out. Oh, and he also happens to be a trained orthopedic surgeon and researcher. Because apparently that’s who you casually meet while deciding which pastry you need. He was warm, kind, and interesting, and the whole interaction just felt authentic. Those kinds of experiences seem increasingly rare, and I really appreciated it. I’ve already enjoyed the rice pudding, which he topped with honey and pistachios because, as he explained, his daughter says you should always have it that way. His daughter is correct. It was great. I came home with several other things to try, all of which look fantastic. The pumpkin cheesecake is currently staring me down and will probably not survive the evening. I’ll definitely be back soon. I still need to try the soups he told me about, and hopefully next time I’ll get to meet his daughter too. Such a warm, charming first visit. I’m very glad I finally stopped in.

The croissant was SO good! Extremely flaky, fresh and difficult to not eat super fast. The soup was very good and I highly recommend it. Obviously not canned and the chicken was very good in it. It was a good portion and filling. The furniture and decor is not fancy, but I’m sure it will come along in time. Also it’s very clean. It’s right across the street from the Westin so there’s no excuse to not have a great breakfast here. Plenty of parking too.
